D-Link (DWM-156) Dongle hanging and stops connecting

There is some problem with the Firmware or the dongle hardware, I am not sure but the D-Link connection manager keeps hanging and get disconnecting. I am not sure if many people are also facing the same and I can’t even guess how many users may be using D-Link dongles. May be quite a few.
Anyways, some issues with this dongle I have seen are:

  • It keeps hanging. The uplink and downlink data stops changing. (There is no problem with the data connection. It shows full signal 3G! Also checked by connecting with the SIM with Reliance Dongle during the same time several times).
  • If you disconnect, it hangs or won’t even disconnect. So it has to be end-tasked from Task Manager.
  • As tested along with Reliance Dongle, the speed seems to be much better on Reliance than on D-Link.
Current H/W Version: A6,  F/W version: 6.0.3IN
Operating System used with: Windows XP 32-bit
As it was hanging very often, I wrote to D-Link Customer Support (helpdesk@dlink.co.in) and they advised upgrading the firmware version 6.0.4.
D-Link DWM 156 - Firmware Download Link they provided with update instructions:

How to update D-Link DWM 156 Firmware:
  • Uninstall the previous  D-Link connection Manger.
  • Plug the dongle into USB port of the computer.
  • Cancel The AutoRun.
  • Double click on the DWM-156-A6_v6.0.4IN.EXE and wait until prompt came as “Press any Key to Continue..”
  • Then  remove the dongle and connect it again .
  • Install the connection manger from the dongle.
  • Open the connection Manger and verify the you have updated Software version by clicking “About”.

After the update, it seems to be running smoothly.
I will use it for a few more days and update if there are issues.
